Spartan Readventure 2009

Scholastic Reading Counts![10/19/2009. Dededo, Guam]  Santa Barbara Catholic School celebrates Spartan READVENTURE 2009.  The activity encourages students and families to read and raise money to promote SBCS’s new supplemental reading program, Reading Counts! Money raised is returned to the students in the form of classroom library books and prizes.

DIRECTIONS

  1. Students pledge to read during Spartan READVENTURE 2009 Week (October 19 – 25, 2009).
  2. Gather pledges after card is issued by teacher.

  3. Have a responsible adult initial for every 20 minutes of reading during Spartan READVENTURE 2009 Week.

  4. Keep track of time read.

  5. Collect money from October 26 to November 2, 2009.

  6. Turn in money and pledge card(s) to teacher on or before November 3, 2009.
    Submit money by November 3, 2009 to be eligible for all prizes!

Holy Rosary Devotion

October 27, 2009 • The entire school community gathered in the Petrie Gym for the annual Holy Rosary prayer devotion. Originally planned as a Eucharistic Holy Hour and Rosary in the parish church, the event was moved to the gym because of the rain. During the rosary, selected students prayed the Our Father in the following languages: English, Chamorro, Filipino, Chuukese, Korean, and Japanese.

SBCS helps plant trees for a greener Guam


October 24, 2009 • Cetti Bay Overlook

8th Grade students and some 6th graders together with their parents and teachers joined people around the island in planting 350 trees in support of the global action for climate change, dubbed 350. They planted native trees and acacia at Cetti Bay overlook. Kudos to all the students, parents, and teachers who joined in this worthy cause.

SBCS takes action in saving the Environment

350 Together Guam can bring CO2 down.
On October 24, the International Day of Climate Action, Santa Barbara Catholic School will join people all over the world in taking a stance for a safe climate future.  The 8th graders, together with their teachers will participate in the Reforest Guam 350 movement by helping plant 350 seedlings in the Cetti Bay area.  Likewise, members of the Youth Crime Watch (YCW) will plant trees and participate in a clean-up activity around the SBCS campus.  This week, SBCS has taken other concrete steps in increasing public awareness on the need to address solutions to the climate crisis now threatening the world.

1. Students in all grade levels joined the Island wide 350 Poster Making and Essay Writing Contest on the theme: 350 Help Save our Planet.

2.  No plastic spoons and forks at the cafeteria every Wednesday starting Oct. 21, 2009.

3.  No styrofoam plates, plastic spoons and forks will be used during monthly faculty meetings.

4.  350 Period:  Turn off airconditioners in all classes on the last period every Thursday starting on Oct. 22, 2009.

5. 6th graders will start a “vegetable garden” on the vacant lot in front of the Science Lab on Oct. 23, 2009.

6.  350 Awareness School Assembly on Oct. 23, 2009, 7:45 A.M. at the Petrie Gym.

With Love Overflowing – a benefit concert

[10/10/2009. Dededo, Guam] Santa Barbara Catholic School together with Magis presented a benefit concert for the victims of typhoon Ondoy / Ketsana in the Philippines. Around 600 guests watched the musical performances of SBCS Honor Choir, Magis, Cantate and Guam Territorial Band.

Our deepest thanks to all who supported the concert. We were able to raise $10,000 from ticket sales and donations. God bless you for your generous heart.
