On January 24, 2016, Santa Barbara Catholic School held the National Geographic Bee competition among representatives from 4th – 8th grade. Representatives from each grade competed against each other in earlier preliminary rounds. After several rounds, Christian Reyes (8B) was named Santa Barbara Catholic School’s champion and Pamela Marinas (8B) was the runner-up. Excellent job to our winners and all the representatives of the Geographic Bee!
On March 9, 2016, 21 volunteers from Santa Barbara Catholic School’s 8th grade class engaged in meaningful dialogue with students from St. Monica’s College from Melbourne, Australia. The two schools, through the guidance and facilitation of the Face to Faith Programme, a central part of Tony Blair’s Faith Foundation Global Schools Programme, shared experiences and ideas regarding community, faith, and festivals in their regions.
Face to Faith works across 6 continents delivering a pioneering educational opportunity that focuses on helping prevent religious conflict and extremism. Students are able to embrace an open-minded approach to others, to diversity, and to difference that can lead to tolerant stable societies.
The 8th grade students have been preparing for this opportunity for several months in Ms. Pangelinan’s Social Studies class. Half of the students who engaged in the activity had previous experience with the programme in Mr. Balance’s class in 2015. These students were able to dialogue with others in the Philippines.

Student Appreciation Day began with a parade around the school, in support of the American Cancer Society’s “Relay Recess” Education Awareness Campaign in Schools. Students carried educational posters and wore a purple shirt or blouse in support of cancer victims and survivors. After the parade, a short presentation by representatives and volunteers of the American Cancer Society was held in the Petrie Gymnasium. Concluding the morning event was a short Zumba exercise that got everyone excited and pumped up. To show appreciation for their students, teachers treated them to a “Popcorn and Movie Day” in their respective homeroom classes.
