Islandwide Guam ShakeOut Earthquake Drill

On October 18, 2012, 10:18 AM, SBCS will participate in the “DROP, COVER, & HOLD ON” Great Guam ShakeOut, the island’s largest earthquake drill ever!

Major earthquakes may happen on Guam. The ShakeOut is our chance to practice how to protect ourselves, and for everyone to become prepared. The goal is to prevent disasters from becoming catastrophes.

Why is “DROP, COVER, & HOLD ON” drill important? As with anything, to act quickly you must practice often. For more information see website: www.ShakeOut.org/Guam

Now going on its 3rd year, the Santa Barbara Catholic School’s 5K/2K Fun Run held last Saturday, September 29, 2012 at the Ypao Beach Park proved to be another successful event. With proceeds going to the school’s Msgr. Zoilo Camacho Endowment Fund, the fun and healthy event attracted over 800 participants, including SBCS students, parents, alumni, as well professional runners and supporters of SBCS. As early as 4:30 in the morning, the Ypao Beach Pavilion buzzed with life as numerous volunteers arrived to set-up for the event, and as families gathered for the warm up exercise prior to the race . Before the fun run started, participants gathered at the pavilion for prayers led by SBCS principal, Sr. Jeanette Marie Pangelinan. Event coordinator, Mrs. Miriam Piaña, expressed appreciation for the numerous volunteers as well as sponsors who assisted in ensuring the success of the event. Major sponsors were Bank of Guam and Mobil. Secondary sponsors were: Hawaiian Rock Products, Alpha Insurers, TG Engineers, Ernst and Young, Freedom Air, Forex, Guam Central Air Corporation, IT&E and Pacific Daily News. The top three finishers in the different categories of the race received medals at the conclusion of the 5K/2K Fun Run event.

The race route of this year’s 5K/2K Fun Run was Ypao Beach Park to Fujita Road along Tumon Road and back to Ypao Beach Park.

Santa Barbara 8th grade student Aubrienne Pangindian wins the Youth (13 and under) division. She received her medal from SBCS principal, Sr. Jeanette Marie Pangelinan and SBCS Parent-Teacher Organization president, Mr. Chris Diego.

I Recycle Check Presentation

Peggy Denney director of Guam Project Business Partners for Recycling or iRecycle on Guam hands a check for $751.36 to principal, Sr. Jeanette Marie Pangelinan in a presentation held at Ypao Beach Pavilion last September 29, 2012. The amount received by the school is the net proceeds earned from the aluminum cans the school collected last school year. Students and their families were encouraged to bring their aluminum cans to the school and deposit them into the i-recycle bin in the campus. In a contest sponsored by the Student Council, students filled 8 bins with aluminum cans, the highest number collected since the school started participating in the iRecycle project in 2007. Congratulations and thank you students for doing your share in taking care of Guam’s environment and earning money for our school!
