AID FOR VICTIMS OF PHILIPPINE FLOOD

Sr. Jeanette Marie, Sr. Maria Rosario and Ms. Roselle sorting shirts as donations for typhoon victims in the Philippines. Last Saturday, September 26, 2009, massive floods triggered by Typhoon Ketsana, hit the Philippines’ capital city of Manila and its neighboring provinces, inundating 80% of the metropolis.  The flood, considered to be the worst to hit Manila in 40 years killed hundreds of people, and dislocated more than 300,000 families.  As news of the devastation spread, SBCS administrators, Sister Jeanette Marie Pangelinan and Sister Maria Rosario Gaite immediately initiated a fund drive to help those who were affected. Responding to their appeal for help, Santa Barbara Catholic School students, teachers, the Sisters of Mercy, and other generous people donated a total of $4,000.00 to aid the flood victims.  The fund was sent to the Philippine National Red Cross and Caritas Manila, the social action arm of the Archdiocese of Manila. Boxes of SBCS t-shirts, clothes and other relief goods were donated through the office of Mayor Melissa Savares in Dededo village.

On Saturday, October 10, 2009, 7:00 PM, Santa Barbara Catholic School, together with Magis, a non-profit choral group on Guam will present a benefit concert for the victims of the Typhoon. The SBCS Honor Choir will be performing, together with  Magis, Guam Territorial Band, and Cantate. Funds raised will be forwarded to the Jesuit Foundation. Tickets are available for $10 at the SBCS Business Office, Guam Bakery and National Office Supply.
