Pi Day 2017

Santa Barbara Catholic School Celebrates Pi Day
Santa Barbara Catholic School joined schools, organizations and math lovers around the world in celebrating and honoring the never ending number Pi on its first Pi Day carnival held last March 14, 2017. Pi Day (3/14)celebrates the mathematical constant pi, the ratio of circumference of a circle divided by its diameter. While it is often abbreviated as 3.14, pi has an infinite number of digits beyond the decimal point, starting with 3.141592653.
Organized by the Math Department, classes from K4 to 8th grade gathered in the school gym to participate in several fun-filled activities that had everything to do with circles. Games that they participated included: Guess-timation – where students guess the number of marbles inside a bottle or guess the correct value of the coins inside a bottle; The Value of Pi – students write the most number of correct digits; The Perfect Circle – students attempt to draw the perfect circle without the aid of a compass; Pi Cake pancake – students get to cook the best perfect/circular pancake; Round and Round with Hula-hoops – students who play the hula-hoops the longest win a prize; Wishing Well – students toss coins into the wishing well and get a prize when the coins land in the glass; Shoot that Ball – students pick a radius and shoot the ball to pick a prize after 3 successful attempts.
Indeed the whole day event was an extra special one for the SBCS family. The Math Department hopes to make this an annual event in the school. Good job, Spartans!
