Bushukan Junior High School Visit

September 14, 2016

Today, in our global, highly technologically-dependent society, information has never been more accessible and communication has never been more international.  At lightning speed, a global community is created and connected daily. With this, humanity has endless opportunities to dialogue together in commonality, appreciate diversity, and exchange culture.
On Wednesday, September 14, Santa Barbara Catholic School (SBCS) had just the opportunity to experience that international cultural exchange, but without technology.  Students from Bushukan Junior High School (located on the Japanese island of Hokkaido) spent the day in sharing with SBCS 8th graders. Together they engaged in snack swapping, games of volleyball, Chamorro cultural games and food tasting, Kendama playing, team building, and other get-to-know-you activities.
“Our goal is to become effective communicators,” 8th grader Cecilia Cesa remarked. “And by spending the day in dialogue, playing sports, and feeling our companionship grow, there was no surprise that students were exchanging email addresses and souvenirs by the end of the day. It was a great opportunity to show our Guam hospitality and our Spartan spirit.”

Suicide Prevention/Olweus

On Monday September 12, 2016, the students of SBCS started the Olweus Bullying Prevention program. Now on its 3rd year of implementation as part of the school’s curricuum, The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is designed to improve peer relations and make the school safer, and a more positive place for students to learn and develop.
Goals of the program include:

  • Reducing existing bullying problems among students
  • Preventing the development of new bullying problems
  • Achieving better peer relations at school

In addition to the Olweus program, the 8th grade students also attended a session with Mrs. Marie Halloran, founder of Life Works Guam who spoke to them about suicide awareness and prevention. Mrs. Halloran discussed the following topics with the students: suicide awareness, prevention, intervention, postvention, and advocacy to help decrease the risk of suicide in our island.

The Season of Creation

dsc07577

This period between the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation (September 1) and the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi (October 4) is a special time to focus on our common home and how we can best care for it. Many across the world are using this time to pray for creation and learn how we can be better caretakers.
Below we provide you with resources to prepare for St. Francis’ feast day and teach your whole community about creation care.
Praised be!
